Hydrogen & Hybrid Heavy Equipment: What It Means for Exhaust & Piping

Where batteries are too heavy β the biggest, hardest-working machines β the heavy-duty sector is turning to hydrogen and hybrid powertrains. Importantly for parts suppliers, several of these still need exhaust and piping. Here's what changes and what doesn't.
Why heavy-duty looks to hydrogen and hybrids
For the most demanding 24/7 applications, battery weight becomes prohibitive. Hydrogen fuel cells, hydrogen combustion engines, and diesel-hybrid systems are emerging as ways to cut emissions without carrying an impractically large battery.
Hydrogen combustion engines still have exhaust
A hydrogen internal-combustion engine burns hydrogen in a largely conventional engine. It still has an exhaust system β the output is mostly water vapour, with some NOx formed at high combustion temperatures β so it needs exhaust piping, often with NOx aftertreatment. Exhaust and piping demand continues here.
Fuel cells β different, but still piping
A hydrogen fuel cell produces electricity with water vapour as the main output, so there's no combustion exhaust. But fuel cells still need air-handling ducts, water/humidity management, and thermal (cooling) piping. The piping demand shifts rather than disappears.
Hybrids keep the diesel exhaust
A diesel-hybrid still has a diesel engine, so it keeps a full exhaust and aftertreatment system β plus the cooling and electrical parts of the electric side. Hybrids need both worlds of parts at once.
What it means for piping suppliers
- Hydrogen combustion β exhaust piping continues (heat and corrosion resistance, NOx aftertreatment)
- Fuel cells β air, water, and cooling piping instead of exhaust
- Hybrids β both exhaust and cooling/electrical parts
Across all three, demand for custom piping persists β the mix of hot-gas versus liquid/air lines just changes.
What to look for
- Material matched to the duty β stainless for hot exhaust, corrosion-resistant for water and cooling lines
- Leak-tight, pressure-tested construction
- Custom fit to the specific powertrain
