What the standards require

They demand drastic cuts in particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). Engines meet them with exhaust aftertreatment: a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), a diesel particulate filter (DPF), and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) using a urea solution (DEF/AdBlue), often alongside exhaust gas recirculation (EGR).

How that changed the exhaust system

A modern exhaust is no longer just a pipe and a muffler. It's an aftertreatment system: piping that connects the DOC, DPF, and SCR modules, mixing sections, sensors, and DEF dosing. That means more components, tighter tolerances, and more connections than a legacy exhaust.

What it means for the piping

  • Precision β€” piping must connect the aftertreatment modules accurately
  • Corrosion resistance β€” DEF is corrosive and condensate is acidic, so stainless (often 304 or 316) is favoured
