What corrugated metal hose is

It is a flexible tube with a corrugated, bellows-shaped wall β€” almost always stainless steel β€” usually wrapped in an outer braided shield. The corrugations let it bend, stretch, and compress; the braid contains internal pressure and protects the bellows underneath.

How it works

It does three jobs at once:

  • β€’ Absorbs thermal expansion β€” exhaust components grow as they heat to hundreds of degrees; the bellows takes up that movement instead of stressing the joints.
  • β€’ Isolates vibration β€” engine and chassis vibration is absorbed by the flexible section rather than transmitted into rigid pipe and welds.
  • β€’ Accommodates misalignment β€” it bridges small assembly offsets between components without forcing them into alignment.

How it's built

  • β€’ Bellows β€” single- or multi-ply stainless. Multiple plies add flexibility and fatigue life.
  • β€’ Braid β€” single or double layers of stainless wire braided over the bellows; it holds the pressure and adds tensile strength and abrasion resistance.
  • β€’ End fittings β€” flanges, nipples, or unions welded to the ends to connect into the system.

Frequently asked questions

Why not just use a rigid pipe?

Rigid pipe can't absorb the thermal expansion and vibration between engine and exhaust components; stress concentrates at the joints and cracks them. A flexible section solves this.
