Stainless Steel 316L
The low-carbon version of 316 — chosen for welded assemblies because it resists corrosion at the weld seams
Key Properties
316L is 316 stainless with the carbon content held to 0.03% or below. The lower carbon prevents “sensitization” — the precipitation of chromium carbides at weld seams that can leave those areas vulnerable to corrosion.
Because exhaust pipes and corrugated hoses are welded, 316L is the preferred choice when both high corrosion resistance and welded joints are required. Its mechanical strength is marginally lower than standard 316, but its weld integrity in corrosive service makes it the safer specification for welded, chloride-exposed parts.
