Aluminized steel is carbon steel hot-dip coated with an aluminum-silicon alloy. The coating gives it excellent resistance to high-temperature oxidation and scaling — up to around 677°C — at a noticeably lower cost than stainless steel.

This combination makes it one of the most common materials in OEM automotive and equipment exhaust systems, especially for mufflers, tailpipes, and heat shields. Its main limitation versus stainless is corrosion resistance against road salt and chlorides, so it is best matched to oxidation-driven heat exposure rather than aggressive wet-corrosion environments.
